Abstract
American political media discourse represents a vast space for the formation of a certain perception of reality. Despite the increasingly multipolar nature of the global political and economic space, the United States remains one of the leading players in global politics. US media resources remain a sought-after source of information not only for Americans, but also for many people around the world, making a significant contribution to the political consciousness formation of the information content. The high influencing potential of American media is largely based on frequent and effective use of manipulative technologies, which indicates the relevance of studying the manipulative function of modus operators in the texts of American political media discourse. The use of the assumption and belief modes, we reckon, can allow a political commentator to advance ideas of a subjective nature that are often not properly supported by facts. In most of the manipulation through proposition examples that we found in political articles on CNN and The New York Times, the authors used the assumption mode.
