Abstract

This article focuses on the professional intercultural communication practiced by renowned German scholar V.G. Admoni. The aim of the study is a hermeneutic-narratological analysis of the means of explicating the holistic subjective-modal tonality associated with the evaluative judgments of the protagonist of the autobiographical narrative regarding his participation in a foreign scientific event and communication with European colleagues. The scientific novelty of the study's results is determined by the interpretation of the subjective modality of the narrative as a holistic axiological coloring “dispersed” throughout the autobiographical narrative. Furthermore, the approach to V.G. Admoni's autobiography as a work created by an elite linguistic personality is innovative. An analysis of empirical material revealed dominant, axiologically marked overtones of meaning that constitute the subjective-modal tonality of the autobiographical narrative of an elite linguistic personality of the Soviet period. These overtones include humanism, recognition of a colleague's ability to correct his worldview, and the impressions of a Soviet scholar on a foreign assignment. These components of the subjective-modal tonality are manifested in V.G. Admoni's narrative through epithets with emotional-evaluative connotations and syntactic expressive devices (repetition, parentheses, sentence parcellation). The application of the hermeneutic-narratological interpretation of autobiography used in this article to research on factual and fictional narratology appears promising.
