Abstract

This article presents a narrative analysis of case studies of storytelling applied to the project-based creative work of students (journalists and media communications students). Educational storytelling is examined as a form of creative implementation of a narrative approach to media text creation, an author's media work characterized by a composition (plot), a description of a dynamic "self-image," a set of character strategies, value-semantic models, and motivational structures. It is substantiated that educational storytelling influences the development of professional skills and stimulates students' motivation for creativity and learning. The stages and technologies for effectively applying the "educational storytelling" method in student projects are presented. A pedagogical experiment involving 319 students from the First Media Academy of the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics (RUE) confirmed the hypothesis that educational storytelling becomes a fundamental technology for media students, developing key creative competencies. A high level of student commitment to mastering professional storytelling skills was noted (82.7%), and 92.8% of participants identified similarities in personal characteristics and actions with the protagonist. The results contribute to the study of the linguistic and semantic structures of motivational texts of digital generations, continue the study of authorial texts as a form of self-presentation, and reveal the resources of storytelling as a learning technology.

Abstract

The article examines the organization of educational translation practice for translation students in the form of a networked simulated translation bureau as an innovative model of educational practice aimed at developing basic professional skills, abilities, and competencies in the field of translation. Educational translation practice is shown as an important structural element in the training of translation students, both at the level of basic higher education and bachelor's degree programs, and at the level of specialized higher education within master's degree programs. Special attention is paid to the formation of universal, general professional, and professional competencies. In order to optimize the network interaction among all participants, a digital platform with a set of convenient project and document management tools is used, enabling fast and convenient collaboration and increased productivity of work processes. This type of practice is shown in the context of project-based learning and a specific case study, currently being implemented at the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, is presented: the creation of a bilingual digital annotated catalog of the Wallenrodt Library's collection of books on philosophy, history, political science, rhetoric, theology and ethics, medicine, astronomy, and mathematics. The positive and negative aspects of implementing this translation and linguistic task by students are analyzed, and ways to improve the effectiveness of organizing educational translation practice for linguistic students are proposed.

Abstract

The article presents the results of an experimental study of the comparative effectiveness of electronic and printed dictionaries in the formation of lexical competence in the process of reading in a foreign language. The relevance of the problem is substantiated in the context of the rapid digitalization of education and the widespread replacement of traditional dictionary tools with their electronic counterparts. Based on the results of an experiment conducted with students studying a non-native (German) language (level B1), differences in quantitative indicators of dictionary use (frequency of use, search time, success of finding words) as well as in the results of immediate and delayed (after two weeks) testing of vocabulary acquisition are demonstrated. It was found that electronic dictionaries provide a statistically significant advantage in immediate memorization (7– 9% higher across all types of tests), but after two weeks the differences between the groups level out. Based on a qualitative analysis of vocabulary management strategies (retrospective interviews), differences in the cognitive and metacognitive strategies of users of electronic and printed dictionaries are described: the former more often turn to additional meanings and multimedia capabilities but less often make an effort to memorize; the latter compensate for the labor-intensive nature of searching by developing additional strategies. The pros and cons of using different types of dictionaries are highlighted: on the one hand, speed of access, reduced cognitive load, and the multimodality of electronic dictionaries; on the other, the formation of an "illusion of competence" and a higher forgetting rate when working with them, as well as a more robust, albeit slower, acquisition of vocabulary when using printed dictionaries. Directions for further study of the possibilities of using different types of dictionaries in the process of teaching a foreign language are proposed.

Abstract

This article examines the influence of Gaston Bachelard's philosophy on the poetics of Michel Tournier's novel «Friday, or the Pacific Limbo». Tournier, inspired by the works of his teacher on the four natural elements, constructs the images of the elements in the structure of the novel as binary oppositions. The process of Robinson's initiation on the island is directly related to the dynamics of these images. The main opposition in Tournier's novel arises between the earth and the air. In the course of analyzing the motivic structure of the novel, we come to the conclusion that Tournier's hero, Robinson Crusoe, is a dreamer of the earth. Air metaphors in the hero's subconscious initially have negative connotations. Air in Tournier's poetics and in Bachelard's philosophy is a childish free element, with which the savage Friday is associated. For Tournier, as for Bachelard, a child is an ideal, which is why Friday is Robinson's initiator, contributing to his spiritual metamorphosis. The article analyzes the symbolic content of antinomic images, which allows us to deepen our understanding of the characters of Tournier's heroes, their mentality, and the similarities and differences in their thinking. Having passed the test of all four elements in the «Limbo of the Pacific Ocean», Robinson Crusoe becomes the Demiurge. The alchemical subtext in the novel is connected with the idea of the transmutation of the soul, which is capable of regaining the perfection of the original androgynous being and its power.

Abstract

The article investigates the communicative category of mitigation in British parliamentary discourse. A cognitive-discursive model of the mitigation situation is proposed, describing the softening process as a three-level mechanism: assessment of communication parameters (degree of agonality, status-role distance, and addressee structure), activation of mitigation prescriptions (anti-conflict, non-categoricalness, non-impositivity, glorification, and emotional restraint), and selection of strategies with their tactical and linguistic implementation through a system of lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic mitigators. Three key speech behaviour strategies are analyzed in detail – argumentation, discrediting, and self-presentation – each realized through a distinct set of tactics and linguistic means. The argumentation strategy includes eight tactics grouped into lexical, subjective-perspective, and syntactic categories. The discrediting strategy comprises four tactics divided into implicit and procedural criticism. The self-presentation strategy encompasses four tactics related to subjective reference and status regulation. The study demonstrates that mitigation in British parliamentary discourse represents an institutionally entrenched mechanism ensuring a balance between agonality, persuasiveness, and adherence to parliamentary etiquette, rather than a facultative stylistic device. Particular attention is paid to paradoxical cases where self-deprecation or formal apology enhances audience trust, and where mitigative performatives allow raising serious objections while maintaining constructive dialogue. The findings contribute to the theory of discourse, political linguistics, and intercultural communication, offering a comprehensive framework for analyzing communicative softening in institutional settings.

Abstract

In this article, we have studied the characteristics of the accusative case in the Russian and Japanese languages. The material for this study consisted of example sentences taken from Russian and Japanese corpora. In the Russian language, we have discovered a great variety of prepositions, that the accusative case could be used with, as well as a great variety of the meanings the accusative case could convey. In the Japanese language, we have found a smaller variety of grammatical structures that included the accusative case, of particles with which the accusative case could be indicated and a smaller variety of meanings. The only meaning that could be conveyed in both languages completely was that of a topic. The semantics of the place to be traversed, the place one leaves, and the examples of sentences with “despite” could also be conveyed using the accusative case in both languages, albeit in a limited number of cases for either of the languages. The semantics of the source of an emotion and the instrument of an action could be conveyed using the accusative case only in the Japanese language. The semantics of limit, elapsed time, and of becoming something could be conveyed with the accusative case only in the Russian language. This study can be furthered by including other cases or languages with other morphosyntactic structures.

Abstract

This article examines the principle of communicative mimesis theory within the institutional discourse of social work. The study aims to determine the role of mimetic mechanisms of communicative imitation in enhancing the functional and pragmatic potential of stratagy and tactic alternatives in the communicative space of social work discourse. The scientific novelty of the results lies in the interpretation of mimesis as a core space for the instrumentalization of the communicant’s cognitive base, creating a pseudo-identification space. Within the framework of hermeneutic-noematic and discursive-modus analysis of polilogical non-cooperative forms of interaction, the mimetic process is divided into intentional, based on phenomenological reflection, and nonintentional noematic, created intuitively based on affective-emotive imitation, when a two-way symmetrical communication model is achieved. Furthermore, mimetic practices, being amphibolic in nature, act as a discursive marker for various communicative tactics used to achieve the stated goal of transforming the conceptual-evaluative space of the counter-communicant. Communicative mimesis, as an intentional or unconscious mechanism of a counter-directional destructive pattern, is viewed as mockery, creating communicative barriers that lead to misunderstanding and complete cessation of interaction. At the same time mimetic techniques, as constructive imitative patterns, are an effective mechanism for harmonization. A comprehensive analysis of imitative non-cooperative communicative practices in terms of creating conflictual or syntonic forms of communication is prospective.

Abstract

Address forms, which are sociolinguistic parameters in interpersonal communication, differ across languages, cultures and contexts. These differences relate to both the set of forms and their usage. The study aims to identify the categories of address forms used by Nigerian university teachers to students, and to highlight the social, pragmatic and cultural factors that influence their choice. Two contexts were explored: formal (in-class) and informal (out-of-class). The materials for the study were collected through questionnaires with participation of 180 Nigerian students from 10 universities. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, using interactional sociolinguistics, theory of address terms, pragmatics, politeness and cultural studies. The findings showed that Nigerian university teachers use several categories of address terms when speaking to their students. In addition to names, which is the most frequently used address category, they also use culture-specific categories including kinship terms, teknonyms, descriptive terms, clan names and geographical names. The study also revealed some variation in the use of these terms depending on the context, with a marked shift in patterns between classroom and nonclassroom settings. In informal settings, culture-specific forms of address are more common than in formal settings. These forms act as a means of implementing rapprochement strategies. The identified categories and their usage indicate certain features of Nigerian culture and identity, such as family orientation, ingroup affiliation, closeness and solidarity. The study contributes to the understanding of the impact of culture on address forms and their functioning in Nigerian English, particularly in а multilingual academic setting.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the interlingual transformation of the English “grasping” image when translating metaphorically motivated collocations with abstract nouns belonging to the hidden class of small objects (the cryptotype Res Parvae) into Russian. The research is based on data from the Russian‑English parallel subcorpus of the National Corpus of the Russian Language. The analysis includes contexts with the classifiers cast, catch, grab, grasp, grip, pick, seize, throw combined with abstract nouns selected according to the description of cryptotypes in O. O. Boriskina’s work. The aim of the study is to identify the main ways of transforming the original metaphorical image in the Russian language and to determine the most productive semantic models that replace it. The conducted analysis has shown that the “grasping” image is preserved in translation only in 20 % of cases. In the remaining examples, it is either replaced by other metaphorical models or completely erased. The most productive types of remetaphorization in Russian include: verbs of motion and spatial dynamics; verbs of sensory and cognitive perception; verbs denoting possession, loss, speech activity, and causation. The obtained results allow us to consider the identified transformations as a systemic manifestation of differences in the categorization of abstract entities in the English and Russian languages

Abstract

The article examines political protest as a complicated communicative and discursive phenomenon in the context of contemporary socio-political transformations. The relevance of the study is determined by the growing intensity of protest activity, the increasing complexity of forms of dissent, and the expansion of channels of political communication, which necessitate comprehensive linguistic analysis of protest discourse. The aim of the study is to identify and systematize the communicative functions of political protest. The methodological basis of the research includes definitional and etymological analysis, as well as descriptive-analytical and discourse analysis methods. The empirical material consists of dictionary definitions of the concept of “protest” in Russian and English linguistic traditions, as well as video materials of contemporary anti-Trump protests in the United States. Protest communication is analyzed with regard to its social, political, and cultural context, as well as the characteristics of the participants and addressees of communication. As a result of the study, protest is conceptualized as a conflict-type speech genre and a specific form of political participation. The author identifies and describes five key communicative functions of political protest: agonistic, identificational, mobilizing, informative, and emotive. It is demonstrated that these functions intersect with the functions of political discourse and are realized through specific linguistic means, slogans, and rhetorical strategies. The study concludes that political protest should be viewed not only as a socio-political phenomenon but also as a significant object of linguistic analysis, enabling a deeper understanding of mechanisms of verbal influence, collective identity formation, and public opinion shaping.

Abstract

This article is devoted to identifying the features of politeness representation in the Chinese and Korean languages using the example of a refusal situation. For this purpose, we did not consider the classification proposed by B.I. Karadzhev in detail, but identified those types of refusals that are used to mitigate the negative consequences of communication and threats to the face of both the addressee and the addresser. As a rule, in "Confucian" cultures it is not customary to thank, much less accept praise, it is important in such a speech situation to demonstrate modesty, which is expressed by belittling one's merits and achievements. Confucianism laid a solid foundation for the spiritual and cultural picture of the world of China and Korea, which had a significant impact on the national languages. It should be noted that Korean Confucianism has its own specifics, in particular the principle of "uiiri"(“一理”), which calls for being caring for the common good and striving for balance. This explains the delicate and polite style of communication in the Korean language, as well as the use of unclear, indirect lexemes and speech patterns. In Chinese, quantitative quantifiers and various etiquette formulas are used to maintain friendly communication. Based on the results, another one was added to the list of polite refusals – a modest refusal of a compliment.

Abstract

The article is devoted to a psycholinguistic analysis of the mechanism behind the collective recognition of metaphors, despite their inherently subjective nature. The authors explore how a personal expression in public discourse acquires the status of a universally significant phenomenon. This process is based on the activation of structures universal to the linguocultural community: fundamental cognitive schemas, deep cultural codes, and emotional archetypes. The concept of semantic resonance is proposed as the central explanatory mechanism. Semantic resonance is understood as the moment when an individual utterance enters a phase with the collective semantic field, thereby actualizing a new, productive, and more accurate understanding of the metaphor’s precedent meaning. To analyze this phenomenon, the article proposes a four-level model that examines the interaction of cultural codes (archetypes, myths), cognitive schemas (spatial metaphors), emotional response (activation of the limbic system), and mediatization (repetition, visualization, algorithmic dissemination). The model’s practical efficacy is demonstrated through the analysis of contemporary metaphors from modern Russian media discourse. It is argued that precedence is a form of collective cultural-linguistic memory, transmitted through repetition, context, and visual representation. Thus, the collective understanding of a metaphor is shown to be not a matter of chance, but a consequence of a complex, yet systematic, psycholinguistic organization.

Abstract

This work, conducted within the framework of the 5.9.8. Theoretical, Applied, and Comparative Linguistics (Philological Sciences) program, examines the social variability of language. It identifies specific features of the speech behavior of pet rat owners, suggesting the development of rat-breeding jargon as a new sociolectual phenomenon. The relevance of this work stems from the need to study processes occurring in the sphere of social dialects of modern language, including the emergence of new jargons, the formation and development of which is closely linked to online communication. The study was conducted using the Russian language, analyzing materials from online communities of rat lovers, as well as specialized forums, and describing the preconditions and stages of the emergence of ratophile discourse. The purpose of this study is to identify the communication characteristics of rat-fanciers that allow us to discuss the development of rat-fanciers' jargon as a distinct language variety characterized by typical sociolect features. The article analyzes the lexical and word-formation features of this jargon, concluding that it reflects the current trend in Russian society toward anthropomorphizing pets.
